The Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant supports and manages certain operations of the Minneapolis Division, which is comprised of the following practice groups: Banking and Finance, Business Litigation, Corporate and Estate Planning, Commercial Real Estate and Family Law.

Position Details for the Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant Position:

Do you enjoy recruiting and still want some variety to work on other projects within an HR department? This opportunity allows you to lead our recruitment efforts for our Minneapolis division, while partnering with the HR Manager to implement strategic HR projects and serve as a trusted HR partner.

We are seeking an exceptional HR professional with a strong background in legal recruiting and a broad and comprehensive range of expertise within HR to support our Minneapolis division and our HR Manager. The ideal candidate will manage the full life-cycle recruitment process, with a focus on law student recruitment, associates, and lateral attorneys, along with other firmwide business related roles for the Minneapolis division of Messerli Kramer. This individual will work closely with the Human Resources Manager to create, develop, and implement effective HR processes and programs to attract and retain top talent for our law firm. The Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant will report to the Human Resources Manager.

Required Education & Experience for the Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant Position:

  • Minimum of five years of recruiting experience in the legal industry or professional services environment
  • Minimum five years of recent HR or comparable experience; preferably from legal industry, professional services firm or similar environment
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; preferably in Human Resource Management, Organizational Development or Business Administration, or equivalent work experience
  • SHRM- CP/SCP and/or PHR/SPHR certification recommended

Key Competencies for the Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant Position:

  • Previous recruiting experience in the legal industry and/or professional services
  • Proven track record of success in hiring top talent
  • Proven experience as an HR generalist, consultant or business partner
  • Excellent communication and consultation skills
  • Ability to build relationships internally and externally to promote our firm and our opportunities
  • Experience in HR project management
  • In-depth knowledge of HR principles, employment law and state/federal requirements
  • Ability to leverage the legal community network to promote, attract and retain talent for our firm
  • Expert in independently learning the current legal market and its competitive dynamics in order to establish and drive talent strategies
  • Must be creative, flexible and open to a variety of requests, as well as present new ideas and be open to evolving responsibilities based on firm needs
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and address sensitive matters with discretion

Recruitment Responsibilities for the Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant Position:

  • Source and build talent pipeline to fill roles, while conducting searches on LinkedIn and other job boards, as well as networking
  • Review resumes and referrals, phone screen and conduct interviews, and act as a primary point of contact throughout the hiring process
  • Work with hiring managers to ensure staffing needs are met. Offer expertise, advice, and consultation to strategize on finding the best talent
  • Assist with interview preparations, all communications and extending offers to qualified candidates
  • Promote our firm with external contacts. Build relationships with outside Legal Recruitment agencies and within the legal community to proactively build talent pipelines for future firm opportunities
  • Partner with OCI committee regarding on campus and “pre-OCI” recruiting processes at assigned law schools, including overseeing all campus logistics, communication with candidates and career services offices, interviews, offers and follow up activities, etc.
  • Work closely with HR Manager in executing a strategy for organizing law school events, overseeing Firm sponsorship of recruiting events and legal community outreach efforts
  • Work closely with Marketing/Business Development Manager to create compelling recruitment and marketing materials, as well as content for the careers website and other legal advertising/media outlets
  • Implement strategy to attract and maintain a diverse workforce. Play a key role in our Diversity and Inclusion Committee
  • Update monthly Recruiting Reports and update key leadership on a timely basis.

HR Consultant Responsibilities for the Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant Position:

  • Partner, consult and provide support on strategic HR initiatives as directed by HR Manager
  • Partner on employee engagement efforts through new-employee orientation, onboarding, firm events, exit interviews and employee communications
  • Advise in disciplinary matters and performance discussions
  • Partner on compensation and benefit program initiatives
  • Assist in development and implementation of HR technology and HR systems
  • Assist in various HR programs and projects as directed
  • Review systems and processes and help to streamline and identify control systems within HR practices
  • Contribute to the development, review and maintenance of human resource policies, practices and procedures
  • Assist annually with open enrollment process and communication plans
  • Assist employees with HR related questions or concerns
  • Serve as backup to review bi-weekly payroll files prior to submittal
  • Serve as backup to the HR Manager as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility for the Senior Legal Talent/HR Consultant Position:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibility.
