Profile

Rory C. Mattson is a business attorney who focuses  on resolving disputes, minimizing risk and advancing the strategic interests of his clients. Rory has extensive experience in real estate and land use litigation; contract disputes; and financial services litigation—representing clients through all phases of litigation in state, federal, and appellate courts. Outside of the courtroom, Rory provides everyday advice and counseling to help clients grow their businesses.

After earning his Juris Doctorate, Rory worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the state of Minnesota serving in the Natural Resources division where he represented the Minnesota Department of Resources, Pollution Control Agency and Department of Agriculture. Prior to joining Messerli Kramer, Rory practiced in the Business Litigation group at Hinshaw & Culbertson, LLP in Minneapolis.

Representative Experience
  • Represented Minnesota’s Commissioner of Public Safety in successfully defending appeal of district court decision denying claim under Americans with Disabilities Act as basis for relief from statutorily mandated rehabilitation requirements for drivers with multiple impaired driving violations. Scheffler v. Comm’r of Pub. Safety, No. A15-0346, 2015 WL 9437562 (Minn. Ct. App. Dec. 28, 2015), review denied (Mar. 29, 2016)
  • Represented Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources in obtaining dismissal of challenge to agency determination regarding the extent of environmental impact from proposed mine progression. In the Matter of the Determination of the Need for an Environmental Impact Statement for the Northshore Mining Company Progression, No. A15-0942 (Minn. Ct. App. Aug. 8, 2015), review denied (Nov. 17, 2015)
  • Represented Minnesota’s Commissioner of Public Safety in successfully defending appeal of district court decision denying application of statutory defense of necessity in implied consent litigation. Dornbusch v. Comm’r of Pub Safety, 860 N.W.2d 381 (Minn. Ct. App. 2015), review denied (May 27, 2015)
